Signature Technique
WINBACK tecar therapy for horses & dogs
Certified WINBACK treatment for pain relief, muscle recovery and chronic tension, available at your yard, or in your own home, anywhere across the region.
What Is It
Deep-tissue warmth, without a needle or a scalpel
Tecar therapy uses radiofrequency energy to gently warm tissue at depth, well below what a surface heat pack can reach. That warmth increases local blood flow, which helps reduce inflammation, ease muscle tension and support the body's own repair processes.
WINBACK is a specific, certified system for delivering it, and Megan is a certified WINBACK specialist, with additional formal training beyond standard physiotherapy qualifications. It's applied through a handheld electrode moved over the treatment area, and most horses and dogs find it comfortable, even pleasant, once they're used to the sensation.
The Process
What a WINBACK session involves
-
01
Assessment
We confirm WINBACK is the right tool for what we find. It is used selectively, not as a default add-on to every session.
-
02
Application
A handheld electrode is moved over the treatment area, similar in feel to an ultrasound scan, with the intensity adjusted continuously.
-
03
Monitoring
We watch your animal's response throughout; most settle quickly and find the building warmth comfortable.
-
04
Aftercare
Any aftercare guidance is included in your written report, along with what to expect over the following days.
Why It Helps
What WINBACK therapy can support
Pain relief & reduced inflammation
Deep, gentle heat improves local blood flow, supporting the body's own inflammatory response.
Faster muscle recovery
Particularly useful after intense exercise or a period of compensation from injury.
Improved circulation
Increased blood flow at depth, well beyond what a surface heat pack can reach.
Chronic tension release
Useful for long-standing back and hindquarter tension in horses, and stiff, arthritic joints in dogs.
Competition support
Used pre- and post-competition to support recovery between runs and rounds.
Complements manual therapy
Works alongside hands-on treatment rather than replacing it; most sessions combine both.
Who It's For
WINBACK for horses and dogs alike
Horses
Back and hindquarter tension, recovery between competition rounds, and chronic stiffness in older horses. WINBACK is used selectively alongside manual therapy at yard visits.
Equine physiotherapyDogs
Chronic joint pain, post-surgical recovery and muscle tension in working and senior dogs, applied in your own home, at your dog's pace.
Canine physiotherapyThe Equipment
The unit we use, and why it suits animals
Treatment is delivered with a Winback BACK3TX, a portable multi-frequency tecar unit. The specification matters less than what it lets us do with an animal that cannot tell us how a treatment feels, so here is what each part of it is actually for.

- Three treatment depths
- Tecar energy is delivered at 300, 500 or 1000 kHz. Lower frequencies reach deeper, which is what lets the same unit work on a horse's gluteal muscle and, at the other extreme, a dog's carpus.
- Capacitive and resistive modes
- Capacitive mode works through softer, more superficial muscle. Resistive mode concentrates energy in denser tissue nearer bone, which is what you want for tendon, ligament and joint capsule. A sore suspensory and a tight back need different settings.
- Power that adjusts itself
- The unit reads tissue impedance continuously and adapts its output to suit the tissue and the electrode. This matters far more in animals than in people: a horse cannot tell you when something is becoming uncomfortable, so a steady, self-regulating dose is a genuine safety feature rather than a convenience.
- Muscle stimulation for wasted muscle
- Hi-EMS currents recruit muscle that has switched off through disuse, which is common after cruciate surgery in dogs or a long spell of box rest in horses. It is used to support strengthening work, never to replace it.
- Pain modulation before hands-on work
- Hi-TENS currents can settle an area an animal is guarding too strongly to let you near it, which sometimes makes manual therapy possible in the same session rather than weeks later.
- Small enough to come to you
- The unit weighs around 4kg and travels in the car, so treatment happens at your yard or in your own home. Nothing sore has to be loaded and transported.
- No mains power needed
- We carry a portable power station, so the unit runs anywhere: a field, a barn, a yard with no sockets, or the end of a driveway. If there is a plug available we will happily use it, but nothing about the session depends on one.
- Short, focused applications
- Tecar is applied for roughly fifteen minutes within a longer appointment. Short applications are tolerated far better by animals who have no interest in standing still for an hour.
The unit is CE marked and manufactured to ISO 13485 medical device standards. It is used only where it is clinically indicated, as one part of a hands-on session rather than a treatment on its own.

Common Questions
Before you book
If your question is not here, call and ask. It is usually faster than filling in a form.

Yes, when used appropriately. It is a passive, non-invasive treatment. Certain conditions, such as acute inflammation, some skin, cardiac or metabolic conditions, rule it out, which is assessed before any treatment begins.
No. Most horses and dogs find it comfortable, even pleasant, once used to the sensation: a gentle, building warmth rather than anything sharp. Most animals settle within a few minutes.
WINBACK sessions are carried out at your yard or in your own home, anywhere within our travel area. Visits within 25 miles of Scarborough are included in the session fee. Mileage charges may apply to visits beyond that radius.
It depends on what it's being used for. A single session can ease acute muscle tension, while chronic conditions are usually managed with WINBACK as part of an ongoing plan reviewed every few weeks. This is discussed at your assessment, not sold as a fixed package.
WINBACK is used as part of a standard assessment or treatment session where it is clinically indicated. See the equine and canine physiotherapy pages for full session pricing.
